About
Portland U.S.Y.
United
Synagogue Youth is the youth organization of the Conservative
movement. Its many objectives include providing Jewish youth
grades 7-12 with a way to meet and grow Jewishly in an informal
atmosphere.
USY includes monthly Friday night dinners, locally sponsored
discussion groups, social programs, and fundraising projects.
On the regional level there are weekend conclaves involving
study, prayer, and socializing, giving youth an opportunity
to meet other Jewish teens in the New England area.
The Portland Chapter of Senior U.S.Y. strives to provide a
balanced program of events in the areas of prayer, study,
fundraising and social action. Generally, there are three
to five programs each month, one of which is out-of-town.
The Junior Chapter for 7th and 8th graders has two to three
programs each month in addition to the confirmation class
(a joint project of the U.S.Y. and Temple Beth El). There
are usually one to two out-of-town events during the year
for Junior U.S.Y.
On
the National Level, the programs include U.S.Y.
Israel Pilgrimage (6 weeks in Israel), U.S.Y.
on Wheels (6 weeks traveling cross-country), and the International
Convention (weeklong program involving 1,000 youngsters
in prayer, study and social programming).
