Yad
L'Yad (services for the elderly)
YAD L'YAD Yad L'Yad--one hand reaches out to touch another.
Another congregant, responding to the gesture of kindness
and concern, accepts an offer of care and friendship. Together,
hand in hand, they begin a journey of Bikkur Cholim, of caring
and appreciation, of mutual giving and receiving.
Approximately
30% of our members are age 65 or older. The needs of these
congregants are great because many have lost a spouse, other
family members, and friends and may have no support systems
in the Portland area. When illness strikes, or infirmity renders
these individuals homebound, the community can offer support
beyond that provided by the Rabbi.
Rabbi
Carolyn Braun envisioned a program in which congregants would
volunteer to visit other members in hospitals, nursing homes,
and extended care facilities, as well as those who are homebound
and lonely. Elinor Miller, Temple Beth El President from 1996-1998,
joined Rabbi Braun, Gail Volk, and Judy Wilson to establish
the mission and goals of a committee that would perform Gemilut
Chasadim--Acts of Loving Kindness. This care giving committee
was named YAD L'YAD. It has become a focus within our synagogue
community for the provision of assistance and friendly visitors
to our members.
Response
to Yad L'YAD has been wonderful. The program, now in its third
year, continues to grow and create excitement and mitzvot
in the Temple Beth El community.
